DIRECT REVENUE & BANDWIDTH SAVINGS:
We actually do make money directly. We do this on things like 404 error traffic and some non-United States traffic that many advertisers would not purchase anyhow (like Korean and Chinese traffic), which we turn into 404 traffic. You will notice that 404 traffic is directed to advertisers. Since our bandwidth is already paid for, even this small amount of traffic makes us a profit. (You would be surprised at how many people type in site names like "something.web1000.com" It's just like type in traffic to a primary domain name . . . and the quality of this type-in 404 traffic is quite good).
CONTENT SALES:
Another major revenue source that we get from providing you with this free service is that we can link to your site.
Although no person from our staff ever looks at your web site, we do have software that checks your site for a variety of reasons. That software is also able to categorize much of your site content and put it into an orderly database. What this means is that we can operate a search-engine that is MUCH MORE ACCURATE at pointing people to the content that they want because that content is hosted on our network, and we can actually categorize the raw data. Without getting too technical, the bottom line is that if someone wants to find a very specific type of picture or movie, we can point them to sites with that content (and similar content) much more accurately than other companies that don't host the sites on their network. We plan to launch this search engine in the very near future, and we already have deals in place with Membership Web Sites who are going to pay us to offer this search engine to their surfers. (Again you win by getting some of the best traffic around surfing your site for your content, and we benefit by selling the search-engine as a plug-in!)
WEBMASTER RELATIONSHIPS:
Aside from this direct revenue, one of the biggest advantages is that we get to establish very positive relationships with the web's most active webmasters (like yourself). Once we have expanded a bit more, we are going to establish a webmaster community and resource area. We will be able to sell advertising in that space to generate substantial revenue. Of course, this resource area will also be a value-add to you, where you can meet other webmasters and learn about new opportunities . . .
This also means that in the future, we will be able to launch out new programs with a built-in base of active webmasters. One such program is just about ready to be announced, and it will basically provide you with the ability to turn ads on to your site (totally voluntarily) and get paid! We figure that if we don't force ads onto your site, but rather, allow you to run them only if you want, then enough of you will take us up on the offer and the quality of that advertising will be so much better as to be worth more overall than the forced ads that we were running before!
We also have a variety of other programs that will only really work with a large base of webmasters. For example, in the "olden" days of the internet, people used to get traffic by trading links and banners with other trustworthy webmasters. In the past few years, this system has broken down because a few unscrupulous people found very sophisticated ways to cheat. The result of this change has been that the overall quality of traffic is way down - so much of the traffic now comes from UCJ's, TGP's, multiple exit windows and other garbage traffic sources. No one with quality traffic will trade links because it is too hard to monitor for cheating, and too hard to get any decent amount of quality traffic back. The whole system has basically sucked the money out of the internet (after all, if a surfer gets blind-linked to your site, they already don't trust you. How can you expect to sell them on your sponsors?)
We can fix this problem by hosting lots of high quality web sites, and offering server-side link trade inserts. In the next few months, we will be offering *Totally Voluntary* link trades and banner trades that we will administer. Because we will host the participating sites as well as the link-trade program, the system will be cheat-proof, and it will take you almost no effort to deploy. The system will provide you with a method of exchanging links with sites that are of similar size, quality and surfer interest. Because we will be running the program, and because we have all the data on the participating sites, we can make sure that everyone involved benefits! Of course, this will also benefit us because we will take a small percentage of the link trade space (the current discussion is that we will reserve 10% of the space for our use - so, for example, out of 10 banner displays, you would get 9 back - a 9:10 ratio. (Since 9:10 is unheard of, you might be skeptical that we can make money by taking over only 10% of the space, but again, because we will be administering the system, there will be zero cheating. The reason banner and link exchanges only offer a 1:2 or a 2:3 ratio is that most of the traffic they deal with is unprofitable because it is cheater traffic).

In the past, bandwidth was expensive and advertising was valuable - so free web hosts ran lots of ads to pay for bandwidth costs. These days, bandwidth has become cheap, and banner ads are almost worthless.
